FILM: Hirokazu Koreeda's Nobody Knows

Just finished re-watching Hirokazu Koreeda's Nobody Knows and it's one of the most depressing films I've ever watched. Nobody Knows was about four children abandoned by their mother in a small Tokyo apartment and the film shows how these poor kids survived the challenges of being on their own. Why do Japanese love making bittersweet films? I thought it was a feel-good movie. But towards the end, something just happened that made my world crashed. So sad I wanna cry (no not really.) It was a such nice film, though. I love the naturalistic feel- very minimal and stoic. It feels like you're really there with actors. Nobody Knows was an official selection in 2004 Cannes Film Festival and Yûya Yagira won the Best Actor award.

The Love of Submarine

Puppy love, that's the theme of my weekend. Well, at least the movies that I watched. I re-watched the Thai film The Love of Siam and this British film called Submarine. The Love of Siam (starring Mario Maurer *girly scream*) is definitely a classic one. I love how they present the "gay" plot without being too "vulgar". 

Submarine, on the other hand is a different story...literally.

I dont know if i liked the story but I love the way it was told. It's visually appealing to me coz I love grainy films.

Craig Roberts who plays the main guy, Oliver Tate, shines in this film. He's smart, funny and very effective in delivering awkward witty lines. He reminds me of a younger version of James Mcavoy.

Oliver's love interest, Jordana, is another interesting character in the film. 

Plus the soundtrack was just amazing. Arctic Monkey's Alex Turner curated the music for the film and did a fantastic job.

So, there. If you want a kilig-warm&fuzzzy kind of film, I suggest you watch The Love of Siam. If you want something different, Submarine is for sure a must watch.  Enjoy the rest of the weekend guys!

Sofia Coppola + Phoenix + The Strokes = Somewhere

I just saw the trailer for the new Sofia Coppola flick, Somewhere and loving it so much. Apart from it being another touching film by the director of The Virgin Suicides and Lost in Translation, this one will have another kick ass soundtrack courtesy of the hip French band Phoenix.

The barely recognizable Love Like a Sunset by Phoenix opens the movie trailer. And when Ellie Fanning enters the scene,  I'll Try Anything Once by The Strokes sings beautifully on the background and I nearly cried. Check out the full track below as well as the film trailer.
